Message from the President

WFEO invites women engineers around the world to apply to the WFEO GREE Women in Engineering Award. The prize is a return trip to Melbourne to attend the World Engineers Convention and US$1000 prize. It's a great way to recognise the achievements of women engineers.

We continue to have a very busy calendar with many world leading events held around the world. We invite you to:

  • Engineering and Food Security in Africa on 24-25 June in Tunis, Tunisia,
  • UNESCO-Africa Engineering Week on 15-21 September in Livingstone, Zambia and
  • The World Engineers Convention (WEC2019) on 20-22 November 2019 in Melbourne, Australia.

We look forward to seeing you all at these important events. We would also like everyone to start planning for the first World Engineering Day on 4th March 2020

WFEO was also active at the United Nations, speaking and actively participating in a several events related to the Science Technology and Innovation Forum.

Last May, the World Intelligence Congress, on Artificial Intelligence and advanced technologies, was held in Tianjin, China and the World Robot Conference, also featuring the latest advancements in this emerging technology, will be held from 20-25 August in Beijing.

4th March 2020 - 1st World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development

4th March - World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development

The World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development will be celebrated on 4th March every year as a UNESCO Day of celebration of engineers and engineering.

The World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) proposed 4th March as World Engineering Day, the founding day of the Federation, as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the organization in 2018. This is an opportunity to celebrate the important contributions of engineers and engineering to sustainable development and modern life.

WFEO received some 80 letters of support from peak international and national institutions, academies and National Commissions to UNESCO, representing 23 million engineers around the world.

This resolution was backed by Member States of UNESCO with support from more than 40 nations including: Namibia, China, Tanzania, Mozambique, Gambia, Equatorial Guinea, Zimbabwe, Palestine, Egypt, Tunisia, Uruguay, Senegal, Liberia, Nigeria, Turkey, Madagascar, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mali, Iraq, Gabon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Serbia, Saudi Arabia, Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Russian Federation, Poland, Kenya, Iran, Nicaragua, Oman, Bangladesh, France, Comoros Islands, Liberia, Jordan, Philippines and the UK.

An international day with co-ordinated celebrations across the world will be an opportunity to increase the profile of engineering and to gain media coverage for the events.

We request all engineering institutions, universities, academies and other organizations to join in celebrating this Day.

This is our Day - an opportunity to engage with government and industry to address the need for engineering capacity and the quality of engineers around the world and to develop strategic frameworks and best practices for the implementation of engineering solutions for sustainable development.
